Why Your Key Won't Turn: The Most Common Culprits
When a key slides into the lock but refuses to rotate, the cylinder pins aren't aligning correctly with the key's cuts. That misalignment can stem from the lock itself, the key, or the door frame.
Most jammed locks fall into one of seven categories: a worn or incorrect key, dirt or corrosion inside the cylinder, frozen pins in cold weather, a misaligned deadbolt latch, internal spring failure, a damaged cam or tailpiece, or catastrophic cylinder wear. Diagnosing which one you're facing takes less than two minutes.
Start by answering two questions: Does the key slide all the way in without resistance? If yes, the problem is usually inside the cylinder or at the latch. Has this key worked fine until today? If it was smooth yesterday and jammed today, environmental factors—temperature, a slammed door shifting the frame—are the likely cause.
Safe Fixes You Can Try Right Now
Before you pick up the phone, try these steps in order. Each takes under a minute and solves the majority of stuck-lock calls we receive.
1. Lubricate the cylinder. Spray a graphite-based or silicone lock lubricant into the keyway—never WD-40 or oil-based products, which attract dust and gum up pins over time. Insert the key halfway, withdraw it, repeat three times, then try turning. If the lock is frozen, warm the key with a lighter for five seconds (careful—metal gets hot) and wiggle it gently as you insert.
2. Check your key. Examine the cuts under good light. Worn edges, bent shanks, or a snapped tip will prevent the pins from setting. Try your spare key if you have one. If the spare works but your daily-use key doesn't, the daily key is worn out—time to cut a fresh copy from the spare, not from the worn key.
3. Align the deadbolt. Close the door and look at the gap between the door and frame near the deadbolt. If the bolt isn't lined up with the strike plate hole, the bolt's hitting metal and binding the cylinder. Lift the door handle while turning the key, or push/pull the door perpendicular to the frame to shift it into alignment. If that works, your hinges have sagged or the strike plate needs adjustment—a five-minute fix with a screwdriver.
4. Tap the cylinder face. Sometimes a pin gets stuck halfway. With the key inserted about halfway, tap the lock face gently with a rubber mallet or the heel of your hand while applying light turning pressure on the key. Don't force it—you're trying to jostle pins, not snap the key.
When the Problem Is Inside the Cylinder
If lubrication and alignment don't help, the issue is mechanical—inside the pin-tumbler or wafer stack. Pin-tumbler locks (the vast majority of residential deadbolts and knob cylinders) rely on spring-loaded driver pins and key pins that must align precisely at the shear line for the plug to rotate.
A single stuck driver pin, a broken spring, or corrosion on the pin stack will prevent rotation even with the correct key. Wafer locks—common on older file cabinets and some car doors—use flat wafers instead of pins, and a single bent wafer causes the same jam.
You can't fix a broken internal spring or a corroded pin stack without disassembling the cylinder. Attempting to force the key risks snapping it off inside the lock, which turns a ten-minute service call into a thirty-minute extraction and rekey. If you've lubricated, checked the key, and confirmed alignment, and the lock still won't budge, it's time to call a locksmith.
In many cases, the cylinder can be rekeyed—new pins, new springs,cut to your existing key or a fresh one—in about fifteen minutes on-site. That's faster and cheaper than replacing the entire lockset, and it lets you keep your current hardware and finish.
Misaligned Deadbolts and Strike Plates
Deadbolts are designed with tight tolerances. The bolt must slide cleanly into the strike-plate hole in the door frame. If the door has settled, the hinges have sagged, or someone slammed it hard enough to shift the frame, even a millimeter of misalignment will cause the bolt to catch on the strike-plate edge.
When that happens, the cylinder feels jammed because the bolt can't retract—the key turns the cam, the cam tries to pull the bolt, but the bolt is wedged against metal. You'll often hear a faint scraping or feel the key turn a few degrees and stop hard.
The quick test: with the door open, turn the key and watch the deadbolt. Does it slide in and out smoothly? If yes, close the door and try again. If it jams only when closed, the frame is the problem.
Fix: Loosen the two strike-plate screws, nudge the plate up/down/left/right until the bolt slides into the hole, then tighten. If the misalignment is more than a few millimeters, you may need to chisel the mortise slightly or install a box strike (a strike plate with a deeper recess). Both are straightforward carpentry fixes, but if you're not comfortable with a chisel and hammer, a mobile locksmith can handle it in under twenty minutes.
Frozen Locks and Cold-Weather Jams
In freezing temperatures, moisture inside the cylinder can ice over and lock the pins in place. The key slides in—ice doesn't block the keyway—but won't turn because the pins are frozen solid.
Never pour boiling water on a lock. The thermal shock can crack the cylinder body, and the water will refreeze in minutes. Instead, warm the key with a lighter or match, insert it gently, and let the metal transfer heat to the pins. Repeat three or four times. A hairdryer aimed at the lock face for thirty seconds also works.
Once thawed, spray the cylinder with a silicone-based lock de-icer or graphite lubricant to displace residual moisture. If you're in a region with frequent freeze-thaw cycles, make this part of your fall maintenance—lubricate all exterior locks before the first freeze to prevent water intrusion.
Worn Keys vs. Worn Cylinders: Which Is It?
A key that's been copied multiple times—especially if each copy was made from the previous copy rather than from the original—accumulates small errors in the cut depths. After three or four generations, the cuts are shallow or uneven enough that the pins don't set correctly.
Test: If you have the original key or a factory-cut spare, try it. If the spare works, your daily key is worn. If the spare also sticks, the cylinder pins are worn or the keyway is damaged.
Cylinders wear too, especially builder-grade locks in high-traffic doors. Cheap pot-metal pins flatten at the top after a few thousand cycles. The shear line becomes irregular, and even a perfect key won't turn smoothly. ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 and Grade 1 locks use brass or stainless pins and last decades longer, but nothing is immortal.
If the cylinder is worn, rekeying won't help—you're installing new pins into a worn plug. Replacement is the fix. A mobile locksmith can swap the cylinder (keeping your existing knob or lever and strike hardware) in ten minutes. For higher-security applications, consider upgrading to a Grade 1 deadbolt with hardened pins and a reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws into the wall stud.
What Not to Do: Avoid These Common Mistakes
Don't force it. Applying heavy torque to a stuck key is the fastest way to snap it off inside the lock. If the key won't turn with normal finger pressure, stop. A snapped key requires extraction tools and often cylinder disassembly.
Don't use oil-based lubricants. WD-40, 3-In-One oil, and other petroleum products attract dust and lint, which forms a gummy paste inside the cylinder. Use only graphite powder or dry silicone spray made for locks.
Don't wiggle aggressively. Gentle wiggling can help seat the pins, but aggressive side-to-side motion bends the key or damages the keyway. If light wiggling doesn't work in ten seconds, it won't work in ten minutes.
Don't remove the cylinder yourself unless you know what you're doing. Most deadbolts and knob locks have a tailpiece or cam that must align with the latch mechanism during reassembly. If you take it apart and can't get it back together, you've just turned a service call into an emergency lockout.
If you're locked out and the key won't turn from outside, don't try to force entry through a window or side door—you risk injury and property damage. A mobile locksmith can be on-site faster than you think, often within thirty minutes, and the cost of a service call is a fraction of a broken window or damaged door frame.
